I was enthralled.

Howdy from Texas,

Fever Dream has been out into the world for nearly a week. I’ve been so happy to see her gaining her sea legs. This is my first novel that isn’t set in the present day, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect.

The response has been incredible.

📝In addition, the reviews coming in have been better than I could have ever imagined:

“Sometimes, you have to accept the lesser of two evils.”

Fever Dream, the latest psychological thriller from the creative mind of Britney King, will definitely touch all of your psychological buttons, flip all of your switches, and leave you questioning whose version of reality you should believe.

The setting and time are perfect for the story told. The story unfolds in October 1962 in the Texas State Lunatic Hospital. Of course, the name of the Hospital is not now a politically correct term, but “lunatic” is the perfect description of several characters. The reader is left to ponder which version of events described is reality and truth and which is the product of a deranged mind. And to question if the lunatics are the patients or the staff.

In 1962, this reviewer was 14-years-old. I strongly recall the national and international events that provide the backdrop to this brilliantly conceived and exquisitely developed story. The fears alluded to in the book were real. It is ironically chilling that these fears are back in vogue in 2022.

Britney King excels in developing the female protagonists in her novels. This book is primarily focused on the POV of Mrs. Grace Solomon. Her children disappear under very mysterious circumstances. Was Grace responsible? Did she have an accomplice? Is Grace delusional? Was her husband leading a double life? Is Grace being framed by the hospital staff?

Grace gets a roommate soon after her incarceration in the Mental Institution. Her beautiful and charismatic roommate Elizabeth Yarring teaches Grace the skills and attitude she needs to survive. Elizabeth readily admits to a life well-lived on both sides of legality and prides herself on her survival skills. And her pragmatism. Such as the wisdom noted at the beginning of this review, that the lesser of two evils often has to be accepted to survive.

As is always the case in Britney King novels, the book’s final third unfolds at breakneck speed with twists and turns aplenty! To further describe the events driven by the plans and actions of Grace and Elizabeth would definitely be a spoiler for the many twists and turns in the story that follows! And, as always, most readers will likely find that most of the events were unexpected. The conclusion of the book was sweetly satisfying.

Fever Dream is most definitely a 5-star read! As a long-time reader of Britney King’s books, I am highly familiar with her portfolio of outstanding books. As a pure psychological thriller, this one, set in a Lunatic Hospital during crazy times that I well recall, may be her best book yet. I guarantee you that it will mess with your head!

Britney King is a master of her art. I’ve read multiple books by the author and each one of them has been great if not amazing. I can not get over how she starts her books, that first chapter just picks you up and sits you right down for an engaging and entertaining story ahead. The characters, the storyline, the twists and turns, The whodunit, the what comes next. I love it all. And to top it off, that cover is just gorgeous.

A favorite quote: “I’m here because I’m a monster. And maybe if you really think about it, you’ll realize you are too.”

An action-packed ride of your life, from page one till the final sentence. I was enthralled. The twists are not predictable; the drama is special and emotional and I’ll let you see what else.

Set it a time just before the Cuban missile crisis. Kennedy was President. They say you never forget what you were doing when Kennedy was shot. I know I was waiting for my parents to meet. But whenever a major event happens, you have important memories and for me, major events don’t get better than a new Britney King book. Fever Dream is a major release. It’s the best so far, in my opinion, and one that really needs, deserves to be read.

Grace’s husband and two of her children are missing. One is in the hospital. Grace is in the asylum. So are Elizabeth and many others. The rules were different then. The rules and methods have changed a lot. This is not PC, so hold on to your hats. Britney is going to take you on a journey you will want to join. You don’t have to be mad to be in the asylum, but you will be to miss this book.

The characters are great, adding so much to the story, all are believable. Some are more fun than others, but all have issues, whether patients or otherwise. There is tension aplenty, which is so well written and had me gripped, I just couldn’t put it down. So I didn’t. This is something that cost me sleep and a meal but was so worth it. I really loved this thriller and hope you do. I guess it’s not a secret that I love the writing of Britney King and I know you will see why as soon as you start to read this one. Fever Dream is her best so far. For me, it’s frustrating that you can only give five stars. I’m guessing it’s so other authors don’t get left behind.

Multiple things about this book grabbed my attention. The glamorous cover reminded me of “Thelma & Louise”. It took place in the year I was born. The mental health elements were a HUGE draw! Who doesn’t love looney bins and lobotomies? And I’ve read some very interesting books by the author.

I wasn’t prepared for the amazing journey this psychological thriller took me on! WOW…WOW…WOW! There were several times I was sure I had this story figured out, but I was wrong almost every time!

If you’re looking for a quick read that will keep you glued to the pages, read this chilling and riveting story about Grace. I fell in love with her determination and grit immediately!

Britney King delivers again! 𝘍𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 is a binge-in-one-sitting, can’t-wait-to-get-to-the-end psychological thriller!

What an intriguing premise! Told in alternating first-person POVs, this novel takes us back to 1962–and straight into the insane asylum, hydro shock therapy, and lobotomies be damned!

As usual, King’s captivating prose sucked me in from page 1, and didn’t let go until the end!

𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗤𝗨𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗦:

“Before the enemy attacks harder, it gives its opponent something invisible but powerful. It is called hope.”

“It’s a funny thing about first impressions. Everyone has them, and they’re often wrong.”

“Those who speak the truth rarely speak it long.”

Oh my! A phenomenal must-read! The human psyche is highly complex and delved into within this story on every dark perplexing level. A crazy institution and an institution of crazies defined do not mean the same thing. The ability to keep you questioning, wondering, and quickly turning pages until the end with personable characters is classic unique Britney King style, this is a must-read wildly entertaining rollercoaster ride! Definitely, one of my favorite pieces of her distinctive works and I’ve read almost all of them! Gritty, crazy, psychological, twisted, deep, cryptic, complex, ambiguous…I’m left wonder-struck again!

Fever Dream is yet more proof of why Britney King is as successful as she is. The story is unique and grips you right from the first chapter.

I loved being transported back to 1962 and seeing how psychiatric patients were treated back then (hydrotherapy, shock therapy, and lobotomies). Having studied psychology this angle awoke more than just the thriller and suspense lover in me.

Grace is a well-developed character and reading from her POV added to the intrigue. The reader is as confused as Grace is throughout the book. As far as supporting characters go, Elizabeth is my favourite, she reminded me a little of Harley Quinn (nerd alert). Not only do we get to read from Grace’s POV but also from the journal entries of her psychiatrist. And that is where I will stop, saying more will include spoilers.

What I will say–I didn’t see the plot twist coming and the build-up to it was done perfectly. Throughout the book, you wait for the shoe to drop, and then… BOOM.

This is my first novel by Britney, and it will definitely not be my last! I have been dying to read one of her books for so long!

This is a binge-worthy novel that I read in one sitting! I could not read it quick enough. Told in alternating POV’s this novel drips its 1962 timeframe so well. We are transported back to Texas State Lunatic Hospital filled with women who are being treated with hydrotherapy, pills, shock treatments, and even lobotomies. Ekkk! The vibes were very sinister and it is written with such prose I felt the “dream-like” quality of the story. We never truly know who is telling the truth, and at times I was unsure if Grace was innocent or not. I think my favorite character was Elizabeth. I just loved her fierce spirit. I also want to shout out the cover. It is just so glamorous and eye-catching. I loved it.

I do not want to give too much away because you just need to dive in and read it to find out!

I have been in a major thriller slump and this psychological thriller is just what I needed to pull me out of it!

1962. Grace is placed in a Texas lunatic hospital and “treated” in ways that would be considered highly unethical and cruel in modern times with the use of, lobotomy against her consent, and questionable therapy. The thing is, we don’t get definite answers as to why she’s placed there…until the very end. We’re only told that her husband and children are missing, presumably dead, and the police think Grace might have something to do with it. Grace does not believe she’s insane, or that she is responsible for them going missing.

Soon enough, she has a new roommate called Elizabeth, an eccentric and bold woman much ahead of her time. Elizabeth is brash yet intelligent, calculating her every move just so she maintains some level of control. Grace admires and hates Elizabeth’s fierceness yet knows something is terribly off with her new roommate. Has Elizabeth been planted for Grace’s downfall or is she the ticket to freedom? You’ll have to read to find out. Expect a night of no sleep because Fever Dream is an absolutely unputdownable book that’ll keep you up till its very last page!

Many more reviews can be found online at the various retailers. I really appreciate each and every one. Your enthusiasm for this novel has me on cloud nine. I like it here. I think I’ll stay awhile.

Thank you for the energy you bring to my work and my life.

I wish you a fun weekend, filled with the things you love, and lots of time for reading.
