Food for thought.

“Clearly, this was a test. The first of many. I wasn’t sure I’d passed. Something just told me I wanted to.”— Britney King, HER

Thought I might share a story of a different kind this week…

Once upon a time…I received an email from a reader with thoughts about one of my books. I wrote back thanking him and telling him I appreciated his thoughts. I also let him know that I’d shared them online. 🙂

The next day I received a reply: I’m shocked to hear back from you, actually. Thank you for cleaning that up before posting it. More importantly, thank you for articulating the intention behind my words and for validating my thoughts despite the fact the email contained multiple grammatical & spelling errors. I’m honored you felt my comments were worth sharing.

I wrote back. The note was a little longer than this but here is the gist: I left the house this morning wearing two different running shoes. I am not a perfect person and therefore do my best to be one who does not pass judgment easily.

The next note I received revealed who the person is. In more ways than one. He wrote: Normally, I have my assistant handle any important correspondence, for the reason that I am dyslexic. I was being impulsive. I enjoy reading material that can keep me engaged and it was late when I finished your book.

He went on to state his real name (the email came from his business) and while I won’t share his identity— not that he would care—he’s that kind of wonderful, I will say that it’s one most people would probably know. He created a product (or several) that many people cannot live without.

Long story short, you never know who a person truly is until they show you. And often it’s very different than you might have assumed had you passed judgment on the front end. I am proud to say we have developed one of the most beautiful friendships of my life. All because of a simple mix up.
