“This must be what an addict feels like, I think, trying to fight the pull of one last, quick read. My fingers itch toward the binding, and finally, with a sigh of regret, I just grab the book and open it, hungrily reading the story.” ― Jodi Picoult, Between the Lines
For the upcoming tour the bloggers want me to write a guest post on the inspiration behind Around The Bend… and, to tell you the truth, I’m really not sure where to start. Because… if one were to look around… well, where is the inspiration not. 🙂
Anyhow, I’m hoping this might suffice. 🙂
In a nutshell… I guess, Around The Bend, is about the plethora of brilliant, and not so, brilliant ways we find to distract ourselves from life.
In addition, below are a few excerpts from the book as well as preorder links…
Myles didn’t wait for a response. He simply grinned, grabbed her arm just above the elbow, and led her out of the bar, and back to his room. Pain was a given, she’d just realized. And sometimes, you just needed to give into it—no matter what form it showed up in.
She smiled to herself. It hurt like hell, both her leg and the situation. But there was something other than the pain this time. She wouldn’t exactly say it was hope, but perhaps the longing for something more. What a ride this life is, she considered. And to think she hadn’t even taken her pills yet.
On the other hand, he had an addict on his hands, and while a part of him knew he couldn’t keep doing this, he couldn’t just walk out either. Things had to change, and the way it looked from where he stood, both of them were about to find out just how much they could take. He could do this, he assured himself. Part of loving someone was giving them what they need.
Jessica watched him go as she dug her toes further into the wet sand and squeezed them, watching as the muddy water poured over her feet and enveloped them. She let him get a ways ahead before she allowed herself to smile—just a little. All along she’d let him think he was breaking her, but maybe, just maybe, they’d actually been breaking each other.
P.S. On things I use to “distract” myself from life: Hoizer would definitely be one of them. 😉 I can’t get enough, I love what he says here—and if anything sums up what ATB is about, then, this song is pretty much it. 🙂
